CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Now that Paul had left, Eloise appreciated learning what information he’d brought forth, but her morale took a dive. If her mentor had a quarter-century of experience dealing with the supernatural when she squared off against Mildred and lost, how could Eloise hope to succeed where her mentor failed?

Eloise, who didn’t have grandparents, had considered Nona as the grandmother she never had while working paranormal cases and learning what she could. But she had no delusions that she could surpass Nona’s knowledge when it came to the otherworldly or even pick up enough skills to rival her level of competence.

Nona was once a novice as well. And she learned what she did because she remained calm and objective. She never got stressed out or let others get on her nerves.

That was all true, but the woman existed for ninety-five years. She’d lived over twice as long as Eloise had before first encountering the supernatural.

But I’ve seen and communicated with ghosts most of my life. It comes naturally to me. Besides, Nona took me under her wing when she had all of that knowledge. I learned from the best. I’ve got a way better start at dealing with the paranormal than she ever did. She could have trained anyone, but she chose me. Why? She believed in me. So why am I so bummed?

Eloise had lost her mentor. She’d lost touch with her paranormal investigative team members. A murderous witch was hunting them down. Plus, she was surrounded by a growing mass of water outside that prevented her from leaving.

Get off it! I wouldn’t leave even if given the choice. I need to help these people. They’re counting on me. And they might end up dead without my help.

Urgency rippled through Eloise’s back and spread to her shoulders, easing much of the tension there. The uncertainty that had once again clutched onto her fell away. Eloise spun around, exited the bedroom, and started toward the staircase.

Arielle and Charlotte appeared on their way up to the third floor.

“Hey,” Eloise called out, jogging up toward them. She caught sight of Charlotte’s thick, wet bobbed hair. “Wow, your hair looks…pretty awesome, actually!”

Charlotte cringed, her eyes tearing up. “It was so uneven, Arielle needed to chop a lot of it off.” She put a hand through her hair. “Do you really think so? You’re not just saying that?”

The woman had great hair before, and it lent her an air of professionalism that demanded respect. Now, however, Charlotte looked more relatable and even more beautiful. When she got back on the campaign trail and opened her mouth, Eloise predicted more female voters would find it easier to identify with her since she didn’t look so serious, so dignified, yet still intelligent. In the meantime, she suspected more men might give Charlotte a chance because she no longer looked like a know-it-all. Either way, Eloise figured her campaign would get a boost by an act as simple as a haircut.

“You’re staring.” Charlotte grunted and put her other hand into her hair.
